What are Immunosuppressants?

Hi,
I am recently diagnosed but dealing with the pain since 2018. The doctor order more labs and xray and told me in two months I will begin the treatment of immunosuppressants. I wanted to know what are they and what can I expect when using them. Thanks in advance for any advice 😀

  1. Great question! I assume your doctor is referring to biologics which is a type of immunosuppressant. Here’s a great article with more info.

    1. Hi ,

Really sorry you had to deal with 3 years of pain without any answers, but glad you finally got your diagnosis! Which medication has your doctor out you on? What to expect can really differ depending on which one you are taking!

But to explain how they work in simple terms (I am far from a scientist so somebody more qualified may explain this better), AS and other arthritis conditions are basically caused by our immune system attacking parts of our body so immunosuppressants weaken the immune system to try and stop or slow down these attacks.

If you let me know which ones you will be taking I might be able to give you a bit more information on what you might be likely to expect. I am personally on Enbrel (also called Eternacept) and methotrexate.

Hope you are having a great and pain free weekend!
