Biologics treatment for both AS and Uveitis

Hi, I’m pretty new to the community, but have found it to be extremely helpful already. Lots of great info on here!

I was diagnosed with AS about 12 years ago following a pretty severe Uveitis flare. The uveitis was the catalyst to test for HLA-B27 and finally explain the back pain that I thought was a herniated disc for so long.

Ive been on Humira for a number of years now and it had been pretty effective at treating both AS and Uveitis, recently though my back pain has increased noticeably and I’m starting to have some reactions to the Humira. First we tried adding methotrexate, then leflunomide but they had some pretty bad side effects for me and didn’t seem to do much. My rheumatologist mentioned trying a different biologic.

I know that some biologics are effective for treating both AS and uveitis, and some aren’t. Embrel specifically was mentioned as not effective for uveitis. So I was wondering if any of you are successfully treating both conditions and which medication works for you?

Thanks for any help!

  1. I’ll look into Cimzia. Thanks!

    1. Iwas diagnosed 6 years ago due to uveitis attack. Humira worked gray then slowed in working. I’m now on cimzia subcutaneous and it is working on both for me . Your dr can advise which will help with uveitis as well, good luck

      1. Hello and welcome.
Actually, I was switched from enbrel to humira (partly) because I had my first uveitis episode, back in 2020.
Within the tnf alpha family, humira seems to be the drug of choice.

Guessing they might switch you over to the IL17 biologics instead?

        1. I don’t have any specific experience on this one but wish you luck! I know my husband’s rheumatologist encourages him to try medications but acknowledges his reaction can be different than his other patients. Good vibes your way!
